Intuitively eating our way through the holidays.
Navigating intuitive eating during the holidays can be challenging but also incredibly liberating. Aim to incorporate some of these tips, but also reflect back on what you accomplished and where you fell short. There’s a lot of work that goes into Intuitive Eating, don’t expect perfection.
Here are some tips to help you stay attuned to your body’s needs while enjoying the festivities:
Pay attention to hunger and fullness cues. Eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re comfortably full. Don’t feel pressured to finish everything on your plate if you’re satisfied.
Put Your Needs First:
Stress and uncomfortable situations can cause us to turn to food and mindlessly consume. Have an event coming up that you don’t want to go to? Say no. Have family obligations? Stay for a shorter amount of time. Setting healthy boundaries is a key part to eating intuitively.
Mindful Eating:
Take time to savor your food. Notice the flavors, textures, and aromas. Eating mindfully can help you feel more satisfied with smaller portions.
No Food Rules:
Avoid strict rules or restrictions. Allow yourself to enjoy the holiday foods you love without guilt. Remember, variety and balance over time are key.
Respect Your Preferences:
Choose foods that you genuinely enjoy. If a particular dish is a holiday favorite, indulge in moderation and savor the experience.
Avoid Skipping Meals:
If you know there will be many tempting treats, try to balance your meals throughout the day. Don’t skip meals to “save calories” for later; this may lead to overeating.
Social Support:
Share your intuitive eating goals with close friends or family. Having support can help reinforce your positive eating habits and reduce external pressures.
Practice Self-Compassion:
If you overeat or feel like you’ve strayed from your intentions, be kind to yourself. Remember, it’s normal to have fluctuations in eating patterns, especially during special occasions.
Focus on Enjoyment:
Holidays are about more than just food. Engage in activities, connect with loved ones, and focus on the joy of the season beyond what’s on your plate.
Stay Hydrated:
Sometimes our bodies confuse thirst with hunger. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated.
Check-in with Yourself:
Take moments to assess how you’re feeling physically and emotionally. Check in with yourself before, during, and after meals to understand your body’s signals.
Remember, intuitive eating is about finding balance, trusting your body, and nurturing a positive relationship with food. It's a journey, and the holidays offer a great opportunity to practice and reinforce these principles.
We are founded on the belief that in everything we do, we are all craving happiness and joy, and feeling great in your body is the best way to achieve it.
